How mRNA Vaccines Protect Us from COVID-19
Making the Invisible Visible
Timeline & Team:
2021 | Collaborators: Medical advisors, PR department, creative production team
Design Challenge:
Bridge the gap between complex immunology and public understanding while navigating the concerns of medical stakeholders and the skepticism of a anxious audience during a global health crisis.
Context:
In 2021, as vaccine misinformation spread faster than accurate information, Atrium Health commissioned an animated PSA to explain mRNA vaccine science to general audiences. As Creative Director, I guided the project from concept through final delivery, leading writer, storyboard artist, character designer, and animation team while collaborating with doctors, department heads, and PR managers. The goal: create visual metaphors that made complex immunology comprehensible without sacrificing scientific integrity.
Impact:
Transformed abstract molecular processes into engaging visual narrative that supported Atrium Health's public education mission.

What Addiction Looks Like
Animated PSA
To illustrate that addiction is more than just a lack of self-control, I developed a metaphor involving a driver and a steering wheel inside the mind. In this concept, when a person suffers from addiction, the driver is unable to control the wheel.
After refining the idea with the client, it evolved into an image of a speedboat shaped like a generic head, submerged deep in water. The top of the head is open, revealing the driver of the boat. The upper half of the forehead is made of glass, acting as a windshield through which the driver sits with a dog by their side, gripping the steering wheel. The driver, symbolizing the unaffected, has control over the wheel, while the addict, represented by the submerged head, is unable to take control.
